The name "Devanathan Gurukkal" is not a new fiction. In 2009, it was at the center of a real-life incident that sent shockwaves through the temple town of Kanchipuram. A 35-year-old priest, Devanathan, who served at the Machcheshwara Peruman temple (also referred to as the Maheswarar temple), was arrested for recording his own illicit activities with women devotees within the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.
What made the case particularly outrageous was its context: these acts occurred even as unsuspecting devotees waited outside, unaware of the sacrilege happening within the holiest part of the shrine. The incident came to light when Devanathan sent his mobile phone for repair, and the technician discovered the footage and sold the clips. The police reportedly recovered 19 video clips, running for a total of about 90 minutes.
